The topsail schooner Peerless, Captain Lewis, arrived in harbour early yesterday morning, from Auckland ; she made the passage in ten days from port to port. On Monday night, the wind veered round to the S.W., and it commenced to blow in heavy squalls, rain falling heavily. At 9 p.m. the barque Isle of. Prance, hound for Newcastle, tripped her anchor, and ty some mishap she ran ford of the ship Waitara. The.ship’s jib boom, figurehead whiskers, rail and bulwarks, the quarter boat and davits, were completely smashed. The fore topmast and topgallant mast of the barque were carried away. Alter getting clear of the Waitara, she got fonl of the John Nicholson, and carried away her flying jib-boom, beside doing other damage. The estimated damage is said to be about £1560. The barque .Tames Hahnell dragged her anchor, and at one time was in great danger. This vessel is, it seems, shorthanded, otherwise the second anchor would have been let go sooner than it was. During the gale, several vessels dragged their anchors, hut no damage resulted. Several boats were swamped. Messsrs MfMeckan, Blackwood and Co.’s Eoyal mail steamer Albion, Captain Underwood, arrived in harbour yesterday at 3.30 a.m. from Melbourne, via Bluff and Dunedin, after a very quick run of 15] hours from the latter port. She was moored alongside the Gladstone Pier. The steamer left Hobson’s Boy on the forenoon of Dec. 13, after receiving moils' from P. and 0." steamer Ceylon; cleared Port Philip Heads at 2.30 p.m. same day, experienced strong east and S.E. winds, and a very heavy head-sea throughout the passage; passed the Solander at 6.30 a. m. Ota the iStb, arriving at the Bluff at daylight next morning : left at 6 p.m. same day, had light B.E. winds, ■ and very thick weather, arriving at Port Chalmera railway pier at 6 a.m. on Dec. 20; landed 50 passengers, discharged 200 tons of cargo, and sailed for Lyttelton at 6 p.m.; experienced light N.E. winds for three hours, when the wind veered round to the 3.W., accompanied with heavy sea and thick weather; sighted the s.s. Tararua at 3 a.m. yesterday, and entered the Heads at 8 a.m., arriving as above. Captain Underwood reports passing two barques, standing to the eastward, in Fovenux Straits, and a large school of right whales were sighted about 15 miles west of the Solauders; the spouts were of enormous size, and very high. The Albion brought 11 passengers and 100 tons of cargo for this port. We aie indebted to Mr Norris for our Melbourne exchanges and report. The Albion sailed for Melbourne, via West Coast ports, Nelson, and Wellington, at 4 p.m. TELEGRAPH NOTICE BOARD. [Copy of above posted at the Christchurch office last night.] ABBIVALB. Dec. 19—Luna, p.s., lor Dunedin, with original passengers, and Messrs Seed and Knowles. Dec. 19—Antelope, cutter, for Lyttelton, with 7000 ft timber. Shipper—Malcolonson. Our Edinburgh correspondent writes Some of your nautical readers will remember a ship called the William Lindsay, which visited Port Chalmers some five years ago, and proceeded from thence to Valparaiso. She was lost in St. George’s Channel on the night of the 16th instant., whenjnst commencing a voyage from Liverpool to Bombay, laden with coal, and when still under the command of Captain Galloway, who took her to New Zealand. Her cargo shifted, and she lay over on her beam ends and became unmanageable. The captain tried to get her hack to port, but did not succeed, and the crew refused to 1 work her longer. A Dutch Brig stood by to render assistance if required, and all hands were, at length taken off by the Cunard steamer Abyssinian. The ship was then nine miles off the Tnshnr, and intelligence since re-ceivo-I,states that she is on a bank there in ten fathoms water, and;that some of her, sails have been recovered. She is, however, past recovery. Her value is estimated at about £IB,OOO, which is ■fully covered by insurance. She was owned in Leith, and was built on the Clyde in 2868, Her register tonnage was 870.—Otago Daily Times, Dec. 21.
