He maintained that the Scriptures teach the death of Christ to be propitiatory and vicarious, and that by it the demands of Divine Justice were satisfied, a view which he supported by the usual arguments. In the debate which followed the essayist met with considerable opposition, his chief points being strongly controverted. 'The meeting was brought to a close by a very suggestive address from the chairman. Next Friday a scientific subject will be introduced by Mr Faircloqgh, viz :—The Sun, which, we understand, will include a description ofj ’* Spectrum,Analysis.” St. Michael’s Aut Union.-— The distribution of the prizes won at the Art Union —the proceeds of which are to bo devoted to building the chancel of St. Michael’s Church —commenced yesterday morning at !) o'clock, and continued until four in the afternoon, when the Canterbury Music Hail, where the distribution took place, was closed for an hour. At five o’clock, the doors were again opened, and the distribution went on till 9 p.m. There was a largo attendance during the day, but, owing to the admirable nature of the arrangements, there was not the slightest confusion, the holders of tho lucky numbers receiving their prizes immediately on the presentation of their tickets. Much amusement was caused by the singular freaks of fortune displayed in the award of prizes. A stalwart son of toil might be scon bearing away in triumph * large doll dressed in ball costume, whilst a gentleman in black broad cloth looked horrorstricken on receiving a hundred-weight of flour. A teetotaller of 30 years standing was presented with a bottle of Old Tom ; « confirmed bachelor had his heart gladdened with a pair of baby’s shoes ; the winner of tho calf went away quite brother-like with his prize ; and n wheelbarrow fell to the lot of a lady. The winner of the most valuable prize, a quarter-acre section of land in the Windmill Road, being part of rural section No. 17, Mr Charles Duggan. Mr Mainwaring Johnston presided at tho distribution, being assisted by Messrs Condell, Brittau, Parkcrsou, and Andrews. By far the greater portion of the prizes was distributed ycstcroay, and the distribution of the remainder will take place this morning at 10 o’clock.
