IN answer to a Letter in the “ Lyttelton Times ” of the 27th inst., headed Bread, I feel called upon to justify myself and fellow tradesman. It is quite true that I, in company with another, called on Mr Brown, and reasoned with him respecting the price he was gelling bread, as I had been given to understand by himself that he was a poor man; and I am ready to prove that if a baker wishes to pay for his flour, that ho cannot make and deliver the article at a less price than charged by the j trade at present, viz., 8d (eightpence) per 4lb j loaf. j In offering to purchase the business, I may j state the fact that, he called on me and offered to dispose of his shop and plant in presence of a witness ; and finding that he had a family coming from the West Coast, I asked some of the bakers in Christchurch to join in the purchase of a ton of flour to give him a start; j and this I am able to prove.
