It appears that he was leaving the barque Joliba, and on trying to step on to the wharf, his foot slipped, and he fell into the sea. He was quickly rescued, but, on being taken to Dr Macdonald’s surgery, it was found that the leg was broken above the ancle. Bangitata Bridge and Approaches.— The Timaru paper of June 19 says: We trust that no time will be lost in getting the cuttings north and south of the bridge put in hand, as the bridge at the furthest date will be finished by the end of July, that is to say, if no unforseen circumstances intervene. The concreting of the last pair of cylinders will, it is expected, be finished this week ; and the lattice girder men are well up to the sixteenth pier. Both the fitting together of the, girders and the flooring and parapet work are plain, being merely a question of time. The cuttings on the north terrace to give access to the bridge will be far heavier than on the south side. £6OO is devoted by the Government to the north, and £3OO to the south side; but it is questionable whether there will be found to be sufficient to complete the work.
