Naples, June 1, 4.45 p.m. The p.s. Luna has arrived with the Defence Minister. She has on board 3 prisoners. One of them, Karama, has been in our hands three times. He was captured first at Tauranga, and took the oath of allegiance; secondly, at Hungahungatoroa and sent to Chatham Islands. There are several witnesses on board, and it is hoped that a conviction will be obtained. He is said to be one of the chief miscreants who had a band in murdering Captain Biggs and family. Mr McLean is invited to a public dinner on Thursday. 7.29 p.m. The Native meeting at Taupo, at which Mr Locke was to be present, has turned out very successfully, although the weather was so inclement. A heavy fall of snow prevented niany influential chiefs from being present. The meeting has, however, resulted in Mr Locke having succeeded in purchasing a site for a township at the outlet of Taupo Lake, on the banks of the Waikato—an object not even thought of a year ago.
