Wellington, Dec. 12, 5,12 p.m. A deputation of merchants saw Mr Gisborne yesterday, relative to the mail service. Mr Gisborne said that the Government will endeavour to make arrangements to subsidise a steamer to convey the homeward mail to Melbourne during the next six months. He feared that the funds at command are not sufficient to subsidise a boat for bringing the mail to New Zealand, but was unable to say till the Government had communicated with Messrs McMeckan, Blackwood, and Co. It possible, the Tararua will be subsidised to take away the next mail.
