ST LUKE’S SCHOOL.
The annual examination of the scholars attending thia school took place on December 17. The chair was occupied by the Bev F. Pember, in the absence of the Rev E. A. Lingard. The Rev F. Pember addressed the parents and scholars, in congratulatory terms, on the proficiency which had been exhibited. He had made himself acquainted with the working of the school, and, having a recent knowledge of the attainments in English schools, he was able to say that St Luke’s was fully equal, if not superior to, the average of similar schools in England. , During intervals in the examination the children sang several choral pieces in excellent style. The Rev F. Pember conducted the examination in Scripture History ; Mr Cobb, Geography; Mr Blakiston, Arithmetic ; and Mr Bowron, History. In consequence of the absence of the Bev E. A. Lingard, the prizes will not be presented until his return. The prizes were awarded as follows: — First Class.—General improvement, G. Ritchie; Scripture, Charlotte Mansell; Geography (Mr Cobb’s prize), C. A. Piper; grammar, Rosa Perkins; history,. Rosa Perkins; spelling, F. Baker; writing, F. Baker; arithmetic (Mr Blakiston’s prize), G. A. Piper; mental arithmetic, C. A. Piper; drawing, Mary St, Quentin ; good conduct, Mary St. Quentin; good conduct, S, Jones. Secobd Class.—Scripture (Mrs Young’s prize) Ist,Lily Widdop; 2nd Frank Iladdrell;
spelling, Sarah Allard; mental arithmetic, Lily Widdop; reading, F. Little; arithmetic, (Mrs Young’s prize) Ist, Georgiana White; 2nd, H. Stapleton ; writing, Lily Widdop. Third Class.—Writing, Louisa Caldwell; spelling, Martha Ansley ; reading, Martha Ansley ; arithmetic, Margaret McGregor. Fourth Class.—Writing, E. Griffin; spelling, W. Lamb ; reading, W. Lamb ; arithmetie, W. Lamb. Fifth Class.—First Division: Spelling, W. Gee; reading, Caroline Newsome. Second Division : Spelling, A. Hill; reading, A. Hill.
