The Surveyor reported that the fencing on the East town belt from the Ferry Boad to the South town belt had been completed during the past week, but that a few panels were left open for cart traffic until the weather permits of the small bridge in Madras street being transferred to the south drain. The contractor for the trenching is also progressing with his work, and will probably complete it during the present week. Whilst considering these matters, the Surveyor tiesired that some instructioni might be given as to the manner in which the Council would have the plantations on the Town belts kept in order during tiie spring and summer, as they will require a great deal of attention during the first few months. The continued wet weather hid materially delayed the formation of the East town belt, but the whole would be completed in about three weeks, if attended by favourable circumstinces. The Post-office, Courthouse, Weighbridge Office, and other Buildings belonging to the Council rery much required re-painting, and instructions weri requested respecting them. Attention was cail«a to tho almost, impassable state of Salisbury street between Durham and Colombo streets, and instructions were desired thereon, The cost of forming would be about £25. The labour gang had been employed during the week in filling in Dr Barker's section, fencing in the plantations on the East town belt, shingling footpaths at the Mechanics' Institute and Ferry Boad, clearing out side channels, and repairing streets with shingle. The report was discussed seriatim. In referring to the plantations, Councillor Jameson moved that any decision as to the manner in which they were to be kept in order should be deferred. He did not think immediate steps necessary, and he should very probably move at a future meeting, that the work be done by contract. The motion was seconded by Councillor Duncan, and carried.
The painting and repairing of the: Court House, aud other buildings was referred to the Public Works Committee, A discussion ensued on the clause referring to Salisbury street, but Councillors Jameson, Duncan, and Sheppard, speaking, to the urgency of the matter, tenders were ordered to be invited for the work.
