DISPOSAL OF THE IMPERIAL TROOPS IN STEW ZEALAND.
(From the Southern Cross.) We understand that the General has received by the last mail from England peremptory orders to send home all the troops except three regiments. The Commissariat Department have also received orders to provide only for three regiments which are to be quartered at the various posts in the North Island, where no transport may he required. The intention of the War Office is understood to be that one regiment should be stationed at Auckland, another at Taranaki, and the third divided between Wanganui, Wellington, and Hawke's Bay ; but, it is said, his Excellency the Governor will change the destination of one of the regiments, quartering an entire regiment in Wellington, and limiting the garrison at Auckland to one company. It is further stated that the troops to be removed from New Zealand will be sent to different stations in the Australian colonies. The New Zealand Herald contains the following notifications : — Peremptory orders, we understand, have been received by the mail from England, insisting on the immediate reduction of H.M. troops in New Zealand to a strength of 3225 officers and men. This force will consist of three regiments of Infantry, the 12th, 14th, and 18th, one battalion of Artillery, and a company of Engineers, with the necessary Commisariat Staff Corps. Th« regiments first on the list for home are the 43rd and «Bth—the 40th, 50th, and 57th are to follow immediately, as soon as ships for their conveyance can be procured. This order is said to be independent of any wish the Governor may have in the matter, and is beyond his interference to control, let the eircumstances of the colony be what they may. The Wanganui Chronicle of Feb. 17 says : —" A company of the 50th Regiment left by the s.s. Storm Bird to relieve the portion of the 68th stationed at Taranaki. The latter are under orders for embarkation homewards. Among the passengers by the Storm Bird were Major McDonnell, Major Yon Tempsky, J. U. Taylor, Esq., and family, &c."
