Melbourne. —We have our files by the Alhambra to March 2. The Argus of that date reports:— Business in the import markets to-day has not been marked by much animation, and transactions have only been of moderate extent. The cargo of Admiral Protet, consisting 0f5500 bags Mauritius sugar, was offered early in the day, and well on to 5000 bags found buyers at £32 to £34 for rations, £37 10s to £38 5s for low to medium counters, £39 to £42 for good to fine counters, and £41 to £43 for good yellow to middling white crystals. The sale was characterised by a want of spirit, though the sugars were offered in bond or duty paid—the latter with reclamation, at the option of the purchasers. In breadstuffs another quiet day has been passed, though signs appear that buyers cannot hold off much longer without offering such rates as may bring out supplies more freely. In the morning 7s 9d was offered and refused for some 5000 bushels Anglo-Saxon Californian wheat; later in the day 8s was offered for 1000 bushels, but the importers refused to break on the cargo for so small a quantity, and subsequently the price last named was accepted for 3000 bushels. Little Yictorian is brought forward, and no sales have come under our notice. In flour we note the sale of some twenty tons of Californian, ex Anglo-Saxon, at £18. Adelaide flour, for export, has been inquired for at £18 to £18 10s' for country, and £19 to £19 10s for town brands. Victorian flour, made at Malmsbury, is likewise disposed of at LlB. Feeding grains, owing to the low prices ruling, attract considerable attention. Some 6000 bushels of fair quality oats have been disposed of on private terms, and at auction some 3000 bushels maize were quitted at 4s 6d to 4s 7d —a decline on yesterday's quotations. Sales of Adelaide bran are noted at Is 6d. Most descriptions of chemicals present an upward tendency. The sale of a parcel of fifteen tons Hutchison and Errol's caustic soda, 72 strength, has transpired at £27, and holders of otherbrands nowaskas much as £28.150 tons rolled wire have changed hands in a line at a price sustaining our quotations of £1210s, £1310s, £1410s, £15 10s, and £16 10s, for Nos. 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8, for smaller quantities. The higher rates required for fine brandies has checked the demand in the meantime, no one being inclined to operate. We, however, hear of 150 quarter-casks pale, of an inferior brand, having been placed at close on 3s. Some 400 cases Mehan's whiskey have been disposed of on terms kept private. For hops a better demand is experienced from trade purchasers, several parcels of medium qualities, 1865, having been sold at Is 9d to Is lid. Malt, in consequence of the scarcity of shipments on the spot, has realised the extreme figure of 13s. For blasting powder, in half-barrels, sjd has been paid. A shipment of cheese, large and small, was sold, ex Ethiopian, at Is sd, in bond. A parcel of thirty hhds of Bass's old ale, i n fine order, has found a purchaser (in bond) at equal to £6 duty paid. The Envoy, from Calcutta, which arrived to-day, adds about 500 tons more to stocks of new rice. Exodds of Squattebs.—The White Eagle takes about 3000 sheep, four horses, and other stock to Western Australia. Twothirds of the sheep belonging to Messrs. G. and F. Marchant, whom the recent increased valuations, together .with the long drought, have induced to abandon their runs in the North, and to emigrate to a country where more liberal pastoral recommendations are in force. We believe that these gentlemen have for some time past produced above 300 bales of wool, and raised from 5000 to 6000 fat slieep annually. The remaining third of the sheep in the White Eagle are owned by Mr. Carl Rommel, who came to South Australia intending to remain, but feeling that the squatters were regarded as an obnoxious class here, has determined to remove his capital and enterprise to a place where they are likely to be valued by the public, and to have a fair field for success left open for them. On Thursday last, Messrs. Bowman Brothers, of Crystal Brook, telegraphed to say they would go down in the White Eagle, to look tit the country, and the ship was detained for a time to admit of their doing so. Two other of our young squatters, Messrs. Davis and Moorhouse, are leaving the colony for Pernarabuco, where liberal terms are offered to occupiers of waste lands.—South Australian Register,
