TIMARU RACES.

February 9. The second day's racing af Timaru presented aslight improvement on the first, as the finishes in some of the races were pretty close and the course waa perhaps slightly better kept. The weather was beautiful and as the inhabitants seemed satisfied with the sport, we perhaps have no right to grumble. We must however call the attention of the Jockey Club at Timaru to a most glaring error in the programme The Queen's Plate, is advertised as a Plate of 100 sovs. 5 sovs. entrance, (winner of the Innkeepers'purse to carry 7lbs extra.) Now we do not know whether the 100 sovs, is given by the Canterbury Government or not, but if it is, then the making any horse carry a penalty is unlawful, as the money for Queen's-plates is always given for a weight for age, with no penalties, the last clause being an express stipulation. If the money is not. given by the Government then it is nonsense calling it a Queen's plate. We trust this mistake will be rectified next year. Nourmahal had nothing to do in the race in question except to canter away from Zohrab who was most brutally punished by his jockey, who ought never to be allowed a whip if he uses it as he did in almost every race we saw him ride in. Every sportsman on the course was loud in his expression of disgust at the exhibition Peckham made, and in England he would have heard considerably more about it than he did at Timaru. The Levels Cup was won easily enough by Nebula, and as if Zohrab (as game and as honest a little horse as we ever saw) had not had enough in the three mile race just before; he was started again, and consequently was this time beaten by Idle Boy for places. The Selling Stakes was popularly supposed to be a gift to Strongbow, but ridden without wjppor spur, the brute would not make an effort when victory was in his power, aud Candidate a big long striding colt won a good race by a neck, ihe Consolation was won easily euough by Coronella, and the Candidate beat Idle boy at even weights for the Forced Handicap, confirming the opinion we formed of Idle Boy at Christchurch, viz., that his condition won him the Tyro Stakes, and that the horse is not really a racehorse. The day's sport wound up with a match in which Strongbow nearly jumped inside a post at starting, and lost a hundred yards or so, which he never recovered, and Lady Ellen won hands down by ten lengths. This finished the Timaru meeting of 1866, and there is great room tor improvement in it. We would advise the worthy secretary to get some one, who really understands racing, to help him to revise the whole programme, and then we have hopes of seeing good races on the Timaru course ; but, if the present state of things is to go on, the sooner the Timaru meeting is a thing of the past the better.
