I » I Oamabt;.—The Times of Sept. 7 states that— Business is still without any noticeable change. Considerable quantities of district produce find their way to port for shipment coastwise and to Melbourne, and for the past week or two the Geelong and other crafts nave conveyed to Port Chalmers a large number of bales of wool, which formed a portion of the Gazehound's cargo. We cannot report any change in prices. Bain, which has been much wanted by «ur farmers for a considerable time past, has fallen in two or three smart showers, which should prove of vast benefit to pastures and agricultural lands. The sale of the Moeraki property, belonging to the estate of Mr., C. Hopkinson, is reported. Mr. M. S. Gleeson is the purchaser, and the price paid is £6500. The buyer, it is generally considered, has made a good bargain. Otago.—The Times of Sept. 8 reports as follows:— Business has presented a somewhat more animated appearance to-day. Town and country trade has been tolerably good, and a fair amount of inquiry continues for staples for shipment. Flour stands at the same figure, but only small sales are taking place. In bulk beers next to nothing is doing; but in bottled some moderate

uvwnug IB uuiug , UUI 1U UUI/MUU BUJiitJ WUUtirUbO transactions have been closed at maintained quotations in some cases, and in others at a small decline. Operations in most goods, though numerous, have not been individually heavy, and market prices are, for that reason, but little affected. No auction sales have taken place. The Bill for the protection of salmon has been read a second time in the Tasmanian Parliament. A sailor took a child to be christened, and happening to hold his babe on the wrong arm for the clergyman to take it, was asked to M turn the child," upon which he turned its face downwards. " No, no," said the parson, " turn it, my good man," when he turned, its face uppermost, as before. In this dilemma, an old post captain, sitting in the gallery, came to the rescue, and sang out, " End for end, Jack." " Ay, ay. sir," said the sailor, and pitched his son and heir over the other arm.
