OPENING OF THE PORTS.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE LTTTELTON TIMES. Sib,—l hare ascertained from the head of the Government that there need be no alarm felt by owners of cattle in this province from the proclamation opening the Wert Coast ports of Canterbury. A special permission wftfl obtained for this edict froia the Governor, and the proclamation only affects the ports which may admit of the importation of cattle on the West Coast. The boundary of the Otago side is as strictly debarred as ever, as are also the ports of Kaiapoi, Lyttelton, Akaroa, and Timaru—there being, in fact, no real alteration except in landing on the beach of the West Coast of Canterbury. This ought perfectly to reassure herd owners as to infection, it not being probable that cattle will cross the runges of themselves.
> Looking at the price of meat in the other I colonies, and the difficulties of landing, I - doubt if it will really cheapen meat for the > population on the West Coast. I trust you will give publicity to this, as some alarm is felt. > Yours obediently, STOCK REPORT. j Christchurch, Sept. 9, 1865. I 1
