COMMERCIAL.

Lyttelton Times Office, Friday evening. Yesterday Mr. Thomas Preece held a sale by auction, at his rooms, London street, of a large quantity of clothing, hosiery, and other (roods. The whole was cleared off at remunerative prices. There was a good attendance of buyers. GRAIN REPORT. Business throughout the week has maintained the increased buoyancy we reported on Saturday last. Fl ar remains firm at £22 ; demand pretty active. Bran is in considerable request, and much has been placed at £6 for export. Inthegiain market little business has been done unless in oats, for which there is an improved demand ; this, combined with, the indifference of holders to quit just now, has caused a slight advance on recent quotations, prime samples being worth 3s 3d. Barley is without alteration, and the market well supplied. Peas not much inquired for— alow sale, at 4s to 4s 6d per bushel. STOCK REPORT, Fat cattle are in better demand than supply, the market being very bare. Several lots have been quitted for the West Coast, at prices varying from 45s to 50s per lOOlbs., and a brisk inquiry still continues. In store cattlo there is an improved demand at higher rates, and every prospect exists that a large business will shortly be done. Wethers, fat and store, remain in statu quo, and are likely to do so until there is some prospect of the Rakaia route, or some other road fit for sheep travelling, being opened. A few speculative buyers are in the market, but holders are not disposed to accede to the terms offered. During the last two or three months some inquiry has arisen for station |property on the part of Australian capitalists. The fact seems becoming recognised that prices here are now lower than those in Australia, and that a safer and longer tenure is offered here than can be obtained in the other colonies.

The waste lands sale for the week comprise Christchurch, 120 acres; Timaru, 20 ; Lincoln, 36a. 22r. 14p.; Mandeville, 60 ; Ellesmere, 378 ; Malvern, 250; Waitangi, 20; Upper Waimakariri, 30; Rakaia, 275 ; total, 1169 acres ; cash, £2379 13s 4d.
