The Wreck op the 8.8. Alexandra.—lntelligencc was received yesterday, by the s.s. Wellington, of the total wreck of the Imperial steam transport the s.s. Alexandra, off the White Cliffs. The following particulars of the wreck were communicated to us yesterday by a gentleman who arrived in the Wellington as a passenger to this place. It would seem that the steamer is a total wreck. On Monday last, at about seven (/dock, it appears the Alexandra left New Plymouth for the White Cliffs, oft' which place the arrived the same evening at about nine, and anchored for the night abreast the Parahinihini, rather more than a league from the (bore, and in 9J fathoms of water. At daybreak she pulled up her anchor, and, with steam only at half-speed, stood in for the anchorage ground, the wind being light at the time, and tnc lead line, we are informed, was kept going all the time. The water gradually shoaled to three fathoms, and she was considered to be in the pussage between the two reefs through which vessels pus to the anchorage off the White Cliffs. The water then shoaled to fathoms, and the engines were immediately stopped. Soon after this she touched lightly, and the lead line showed 1J fathoms. The engines were immediately inckod at full speed, but in clearing off, she was struck aft by a sunken rock, and again amidships. At this time, she was a full mile from the shore. The jib having been run up, and the vessel's head canted off shore, she stood out a couple of miles, when it was found that she bad six feet of water in the hold. Under these circumstances, there was nothing for it but to run her on shore, which the captain immediately decided on doing. When about half a mile from the nearest point of land the fires were put out, and she sank just before reaching the land, the tide at the same time being three-quarters flood. By the time that it was high water the sea was over her main fleck, up to the forecastle; the mainmast had to bo cut away, as it had started from the maindeck about ten inches, and was swaying backwards and forwards. It is stated, that the person put on board as pilot, at New Plymouth, was not in a fit state to take cltarge of a vessel.—New Zealand Herald, Aug. 15.
