THE ENGLISH TURF.

By the April mail we received merely the tblfegraphic. intelligence of tho result of the Two Thousand and One Thousand, while by the last mail we received again only the bare facts that Gladiateur won the Derby, and Regalia the Oaks. Perhaps tho telegraph may be considered by sporting men a most lmppy institution, as, through its agency, in these far off-lands, they so soon got put out of their misery, and, though we undoubtedly miss the details, the bare fact of knowing thnt one has either lost or won is some satisfaction.

Returning now to the Two Thousand, we find from all accounts that it was, in every sense of the word, a "splendid race,"and that it gave satisfaction to the largest concourse, ever gathered on the heath. Grimshaw's riding of Count Lagrange's horse is described as being beyond comparison. But as the whole race was so exciting, we reprint the details, taken from Bell's Life of tho 6th of May

T. French 0 Betting: 100 to 30 agst Bedminster, 4 to 1 each agst Liddington and Breadalbane, 6 to 1 agst Kangaroo, 7 to 1 agst Gladiateur, 100 to 8 agst Archimedes, 25 to 1 agst Ariel, 40 to 1 agst Jack o'Lantern, 50 to 1 each agst Rifle and Zambesi, and 100 to 1 each agst Tibia and Lazzaretto, In excellent time the eighteen runners were weighed for, the lot, with the exception of the three Danebury horses, being saddled at the Ditch side, and

I this trio, making their way from the New Stand, soon joined the others below. After some little delay, caused by the immense number of horsemen and pedestrians blocking up the course, the competitors assembled at the post, and were soon got into position by Mr. M'George ; but before reaching the starting point, several of them broke away and ran a considerable distance before they were stopped, the foremost of the " breakaways" being Liddington, Zambesi, Bedminster, Jack o'Lantern, and Regalia, while Archimedes, Kangaroo, and Cedric were somewhat fractious. At a few minutes past four, however, a capital start was effected, and for the first two hundred yards or so the majority ran nearly abreast, but Ariel, Rifle, and Joker, on the upper ground, outpaced at the outset, were some lengths in the rear. Pantaloon then took the lead and cut out the work at a slashing pace, followed by his stable companion Kangaroo, Regalia, Lidding-

ton, Zambesi, Gladiateur, Bedminster, and Breadalbane in the order named, but stretching across the course almost in line, and at the heels of this lot were Jack o'Lantern, Archimedes, Lazzaretto, and Le Mandarin, to whom succeeded Ariel, Rifle, and Joker. No very material changes in the above positions were for some time observable, and in passing the Bushes, Pantaloon still held the command,

those immediately in his wake being Kangaroo, Zambesi, Breadalbane, Gladiateur (nearly in the centre), Regalia, Bedminster, Liddington, and Archimedes; the latter of whom, seemingly outpaced at first, had now caught his horses, Gladiateur pulling double. Descending the Bushes Hill Pantaloon retired, and Bedminster, to the dismay of his backers, fell back beaten, while Zambesi now showed slightly in advance of Kangaroo, Gladiateur, Liddington, Archimedes, and Brjeadalbane, all well together. In the next few strides, however, Zambesi resigned to his stable companion Liddington, and Kangaroo

—and with him the hopes of Danebury—was disposed of in the Abingdon Mile bottom, rising which Gladiateur took the lead from Liddington, and half way in the cords Aldcroft bringing up Archimedes with a rush he also headed the late Derby' Crack, but was unable to overhaul the French colt, who won very cleverly by a neck ; Liddington finishing a neck only from the second, while a head only separated him from his stable companion Zambesi, close up with the latter, so close indeed that it was difficult to say which had really the advantage ; Breadalbane was fifth, then came Jack o' Lantern sixth, Bedminster, Ariel,, and Kangaroo. At

the tail of the ruck were Joker, Tilt, Lazzaretto, and Cedric. Run in 1 min 51 sec. The value of the stakes is stated to be £5100, and yet the stables atfe not mentioned as being very great winners.

The Duke of Beaufort ha§ not hitherto achieved any particular successes, and Siberia's victory must have been a satisfaction. We append a short account of this race also. While referring to the Duke of Beaufort's stud, it will not be out of place to mention that at a late meeting of the Jockey Club, Admiral Rous, in accordance with the established rules, resigned the presidency, nominating his Grace as his successor. The Duke however declined, and the gallant Admiral was unanimously re-elected for the ensuing year.

Thursday, Mat 4. THE ONE THOUSAND DAY. The Onb Thousand Guikbas Stakes, of 100 sovs each, hft j for 3-yr-olds j fillies, Bst 101b. 64 subs. D.M. 7 furlongs 210 yards. The following alaoran Peeress, Contract, Nukuheva, Biondina, Kate Hampton Gardevisure, Reginella, and Miss Hobbie. Betting ; 6 to 4 agst Gardevisure, 3 to 1 agst Siberia, 10 to 1 each agst White Duck and La Fortune, 100 to 7 agst Contract, 100 to 6 agst Nukuheva, 20 to 1 agst Peeress, aud 25 to I agst Biondina. The Race.—The breaking away of Contract caused a few false starts, but eventually the lot got away, Miss Hobbie having the worst of what was other wisea good start by a length, Siberia making running on the judge's box side slightly in front of White Duck, Nukuheva, Gardevisure, La Fortune, Contract, and Reginella, being on the left in a line, following whom were Miss Hobbie and Biondina. Gardevisure went to the front after going half a mile, Contract and Nukuheva improving their positions, but they dropped back in the next few hundred yards, where Gardevisure was still in possession of a clear lead, Siberia and White Duck being next, with La Fortune next them, and the reit with no chance of success. Two distances from home Gardevisure suddenly gave way, and "tiring to nothing," Siberia and White Duck passed her easily, the result apparently lying between the two till within a couple of hundred yards from the finish, when La Fortune coming with a ( rush, rapidly caught the pair, but the goal was too near, and Fordham sending out Siberia simultaneously with the movement made upon the French filly, won by a length and a half, White Duck only defeating La Fortune a head for second honours. Gardevisure, two lengths, off, was fourth ; Miss Hobbie, six lengths in the rear of Gardevisure, was fifth ; Nukuheva sixth, Kate Hampton seventh, Reginella eighth, Feerlesi.ninth, Contract tenth, and Biondina laat. From the moihent of his winning the 2000, Gladiateur gradually, yet surely, came for-

J ward as favourite for tbe Derby, the Duke at the same time falling in the market at a rapid rate. In tho quotations we published three weeks ago, Gladiateur was scarcely mentioned, but on Monday, May 22, we find the following prices published at Tattersall's 5 to 1 agst Glfldiftteur (t U to 2) 8 „ 1 „ Archimedes (t) 9 »> 1 Wild Charley (t and off) 9 » 1 „ The Duke (t) 11 m 1 », Bredulbanc (t) 100 „ fl „ JJroonielnw (t) 25 „ 1 „ Chattanooga (t and off) It is stated that very little business was being done about tho Oaks, but the betting stood as under 4 to 1 agst Orliane (off) 4 „ 1 „ Siberia (t) 5 „ 1 „ Wild Agnes (t) 6 „ 1 „ Whit# Duck (t)

Til» WINNEtt OF THB TWO THOUSAND AND THli DEHIIY. Gladiateur is a dark bay colt by Monarque (a French bred horse), out of Miss Gladiateur (also French bred). Ho is a big horse, standing over 16 hands, has a large and by no means handsome bead, but splendid shoulders, and is very deep in the girth. He is described as looking far more like a hunter than a racehorse ; his hind quarters dropping considerably. He is long in the legs, but they show plenty of bone, and two enlarged pastern joints are said to do him no harm, being the result of an accident when he was a foal. We annex a list of his performances and engagements, the result of which are worth watching Pjfißi'OMtANCEs.—lß64, at Newmarket Second October, carrying Bst 101b, wo* The Clearwell Stakes, beating Joker Bst lOlb second, Pantaloon Bst 101b third, Reginella Bst lllb fourth, Ostregor, Don Basilio, Newcourt, Heir-at-Law, c by Oulston—Vest, YerI derer, Solitaire, Kate Hampton, arid Maid Marian.
