We understand, as the general drift of the news from the North, both public and private, that the G-oyern-ment haye absolutely declined to have anything further to do with the military authorities. The Governor appears to have supervised the operations at Wereroa himself: and a formal protest has been made against the action of the General. Under the circumstances of the campaign, past and present, since the end of last year, the Government will probably ask the Assembly to support them in refusing to acknowledge any liability to payment for the Queen's troops during that period, and in taking steps to convince the Home Government that the colony believes itself able and willing to undertake the task of putting an end to the. rebellion. In this policy it is expected that Mr. "Weld's Government will have the cordial support of a majority of both Houses; and it is rumoured that the Auckland members will be headed by Mr. Stafford to form the minority in the Lower House.
