CORRESPONDENCE.
PUBLIC HOUSE OBDINAMCE. TO THE EDITOR OP THE LTTTELTON TIHEB. Sib, —Allow me to avail myself of your paper as a means of explaining to my friends and the public the circumstances attending the withholding of the renewal of my license. Under the 25 th clause of the Public-house Ordinance, it is required that the money for the license shall be paid into the treasury on the Ist of July, or, in default, the party shall be subject to the penalty of £10. Instead of paying the money into the treasury, I forwarded my cheque to the Besident's Magistrate's court at Kaiapoi, on the day required by the Ordinance, viz., the Ist of July, supposing it was in order to do so. To my great surprise, three days after, my cheque was returned from the Resident Magistrate's court, informing me they could not receive it, and that I must pay it into the treasury at Christchurch. I immediately started for Christchurch, and obtained an interview with his Honor the Superintendent, who assured me that, under'the circumstances, it was out of his power to grant the renewal of my license without enforcing the penalty of Ten Pounds; which sum I was obliged to pay before the renewal of my license was granted. I am, Ac., WILLIAM THOMAS BAUGH. Kangiora Hotel, Eangiora, July 10th, 1805.
