TOWN AND COUNTRY.

The English Mail.—The following answer was received to a telegram enquiring when the mail would be received in Lyttelton : —''Dunedin, 1.39 p.m., 10th July, ISO. I }. Lady Bird, two to-day, English mail; Albion, to-morrow, Lyttelton and Wellington." Eluctoual.—The revising officers have now completed the revision of the electoral lists. The number of voters upon tho roll for Kuinpoi is 5(55 ; for the Avon district, 7G4 ; for the lleivthcote, 1061; and for Akaroa, 216. Alkmokial Window.—We have been informed that a very beautiful memorial window of stained glass, to the memory of Miss Andrews, for Trinity Church, Lyttelton, arrived by the Canterbury, and was landed oil Saturday lust. It will be fixed in the church in a tew days, when we hope to have the opportunity of giving our readers rt description of it. It was designed by Mr. Buttcrfield, architect, of St. Augustine's College, Canterbury. Civic Knteutainment.—Last night the Chairman of the City Council, Isaac Luck, Esq., gave the customary annual official dinner. Besides the members and officers of the City Council, there were present his Honor the Superintendent, several members of the Executive Council, his Honor the Judge, the

Resident Magistrate of Chrlstchurch, the Speaker of the Provincial Council, some members of that body, and of the General Assembly, and other gentlemen of distinction. Messrs. Kohler supplied the instrumental music during the evening; And the dinner was provided by Messrs. Morton and Robertson in their usual style. Akaboa Mechanics' Institute.—-The annual meeting of the members of the above institute, for the purpose of electing officers for the ensuing year, was held at the Reading Room, Akaroa Town Hall, on the evening of Thursday, the Oth inst., E. C. Latter, Esq., in the chair. The following gentlemen were elected E. C. Latter, Esq., president ; Mr. C. L. Wiggins, vice-president j Mr. S. Watkins, secretary and treasurer; and Messrs. Adams, Murray, Garwood, Penlington, and H. G. Watkins, committee men. In connection with this society, we understand a conversazione will shortly take place in the Akaroa Town Hall. Mandkvillk Faemers' Cluh.—An adjourned meeting of this club was held on Saturday evening last, at the Kaikainui Hotel, Kaiapoi, for the purpose of receiving the report of the subcommittee, appointed at last meeting, to select a piece of ground suitable for the annual ploughing match, and also appointing the day on which to hold the match. The committee explained that they had chosen a site on the North road, belonging to Mr. Macpherson, of Christchurch ; and as to fixing tho day for the match, they were unable to come to any decision; but though there was plenty of time for the purpose, they recommended that it should be held at the close of this month, if possible. It was resolved to write to Mr. J. D. Macpherson, asking if he would give the club the use of the paddock selected by the committee. The meeting then adjourned. Rifle Competition.—Yesterday morning, at ten o'clock, about 25 members belonging to No. 3 Company of Rifle Volunteers, left Lyttelton for the rifle range in Polhill's Bay, to fire for the several prizes, accompanied by their band. The whole of the members had not an opportunity of firing; and also owing to the late hour when the company returned to Port, we have not been able to obtain full particulars in time for our present issue, but hope to do so to-morrow, when the lists will be complete. For the Champion Prize Cup, valued at £35, there were 22 competitors ; the ranges were at 200, 300, and 400 yards. The following four volunteers obtained the highest scores, but, owing to ties, they will have to fire again Capt. Aynsley, 33 ; Private Bradley, 33; Private Tehler, 33; Private Tillar, 32. For the Prize Rifles, &c., at the same ranges, Willcox, 27 ; Milsom, 27; Jenkins, 27. In the Champion Cup Match, two of the competitors have to fire at the 400 yards range.

Rifle Match.—The following are the scores made by No. 5 (Kaiapoi) Company on Saturday last, in the return match with No. 6, who, it will be remembered, won the first one on the Ist of this month. No. 6 Company were unable to fire on the same day as their opponents, but will do so during the present week. The score made by No. sin the first match was 241; a considerable improvement is therefore apparent:—

The average is 33 per man, which is a very creditable one. Rifle Match.—The return match between No. 1 and No. 5 (Eaiapoi) Companies of the C.R.V. took place yesterday, at the Hillsborough Range. The first match came off at Kaiapoi, when No. 5 were successful on their own ground. This time, the same has.been the case with No. 1, by 229 points to 209. The match was at 200, 400, and 500 yards, 5 rounds at each range, 6 men of a side. The day was fine and bright, but cold, the previous night having been one of the sharpest frosts of the year. The Kaiapoi men, being the visitors, were entertained by their opponents at dinner, after the match. The following is the score, from which it will be seen that the average of No. 1 was 38.3 ; that of Eaiapoi, 84.8. No. 5, Kaiapoi.

House Taming.—Professor Belew made Ins second experiment yesterday, at Edds' yards, m presence of a class numbering about sixty gentlemen. The subject of his lecture was a strong bay mare, between four and five years old which had hadafoal, and never had been handled ; she bore a reputation for bad temper, and was evidently nervous and sullen. After explaining the theory of his art, as on ?<H® VlO . U8 da y. the Professor proceeded to exhibit its practice, in reducing . the mare m question to submission, which ha»r P T? y done u in 1688 than an hour. The mare, which at first would hardly stand to be approached, permitted the operator at last to fondle her, throw a cloth over her back, jump on and off, stand up on in!i 'au' ln that Potion, open, furl, and throw about an umbrella. The spectators were perfectly satisfied with the success of the art, especially as the case differed in many respects from that undertaken on Saturday Provincial Gazette, No. 88, dated July 10, contains a proclamation by »nnSuperintendent, making the annexed reserves m the Hokitika district:P iece « r parcel of land.containingone rood four perches, in the town of Hokitika commencing at the junction of Gibson's quay and be well street, following a northerly direction along bewell street, a distance of one cham sixty-five links; thence easterly, at a SSV ° f two chllillß i thence of on! ii a , K lt ailule - a distance of one chain eleven links; and returning along Gibson's Quay to the comlTnksAH t?.V . di9tanco ()f two five n !L, « P l et ' fi or Imrcel of containing three roods and twenty-six nerelipu ir,„«L tO 7 Sl lloki,ik ». oomraen ci „ P B a. Clark, M. Sprot, C. W. H. Woledge, J. King, and G. D. Lockhart. The Gazette concludes with a notice with reference to the proceedings under the Debtors and Creditors Act, 1862. Priwobbs' Theatiib.—The entertainment commenced with a short drama, which was well received by the audience. After this, Professor Bushel delivered a bcturo en electricity. He described the various kinds of electricity, and the mode in which they could be produced. The lecturer exhibited a machine for using electro-magnetism as a motive power; but said that he would not describe its construction at that time. After this, he gave some amusing instances of mock spirit-rapping. A table was made to rap very freely, and raps were heard in the boxes, the roof, beneath the stage, and elsewhere, in answer to questions put by the lecturer. A bell hanging from the ceiling was also made to ring in obedience to the sameunseen agency. Next came what is called the rope-tying feat, but it should rather be called the rope untying feat. Mr. Belew was the hero of this, and Mr. Coker the tyer-up, who, in order to make his work doubly sure, added his pockethandkerchief to the rope, to lengthen it. When it is considered that this feat is not more a great muscular effort than an exposure of the spirit fraud of the Brothers Davonport, we think this addition to the difficulty of the struggle will be thought unnecessary. Mr. Belew freed himself in three minutes and thirty-five seconds. Finally, some experiments were made in electro-biology by Mr. Bushel. Thirteen persons offered themselves as subjects for the operator, and five of them were more or less susceptible ; but the Professor's power over them was but slight—so slight, that he apologised to his audience for the meagreness of the entertainment. We are informed that the Professor will repeat his entertainment to-night. Sir George Grky on his Wat Home.— The Adelaide Register says :—" We hear that Sir George Grey, Governor of New Zealand, is not unlikely to visit his old seat of Government in South Australia, on his going to England."
