President Lincoln's assassination occurred on April 15th, at half-past nine in the evening. He was sitting in a private box at the New York theatre, with Mrs. Lincoln, Mrs. Harris, and Major Rathbone. He was shot by Booth, who entered the box behind. The ball entered at the back of the President's ear, causing instant death. Booth then leapt on the stage, brandishing a knife, and exclaiming " Sic semper tyrants." He escaped at the back of the theatre, but, resisting, was shot dead. Simultaneously, another assassin entered Seward's sick room, under pretence of urgent business, rushed on him, stabbing his throat and face. Seward's son, coming to his father's rescue, was dangerously wounded by the assassin. The father's wound is thought to be fatal. General Grant and his wife were unexpectedly prevented from accompanying the President to the theatre. ENGLAND.
