A Dutch settler, Charles Brown, of good character, with a wife and three young children, living on the Kaiapoi Island, is a small tenant farmer, has for some years being suffering from permanent lockjaw, which renders him incapable of doing anything to support himself and family, besides inflicting upon him at times intense torture. During the late fresh in the river, his sod house was entirely destroyed, with most of his small stores, bees, poultry, &c. It is wished to raise some funds sufficient to erect him a wooden house on a higher part of his land, and to replace his goods, if possible. His neighbours have for some time assisted him by cultivating and harvesting a part of his land, but being themselves sufferers from the fresh, we are induced to appeal to the public generally in the present emergency.
