BIRTH.

IfIPEBCniT. —On the 20th inst., the wife of Robert Speechly, Esq., Resident Cathedral Architect, Montreal street* of a daughter.

Messrs. Gerbaulet and Co.'s Circular, dated Rot- j terdam, the 19th November, states that " the Professor van der Boon Mesch, which put to sea from our outport to Melborne (H. 8.) on the 22nd October, was run into four days later, on the 26th, in the Channel by the Havre and New York York steamer Washington. The ship as well as the steamer proceeded to Cherbourg for repairs, and we regret to say that the damage done to the Professor van der Boon Mesch is very serious. The entire cargo, which we are informed, has, however, not suffered by the collision will have to be discharged. The time to be used for discharge, repairing, and again taking in cargo, has been calculated at Cherbourg as likely to be from three to four months, and we cannot, therefore, expect the ship to proceed on her voyage before February next. The Maria Diederika, also bound for Melbourne (H. 8.), put to sea on the 16th December. She has on board 16,635 red and 700 green cases geneva, and equal to 1900 boxes candles. We are now loading for Melbourne (H. 8.) the Dutch frigate Susanne, to leave early in December."

Tho Kooria Mooria, for Port Phillip, put into Portsmouth on the 27th of November, having experienced heavy weather, and sailed on the 9th of December. The Cheviot, which cleared from Glasgow tor Melbourne on the 31st of October, did not leave Lamlash until the 2nd* December. The Royal Standard, s.s., which sailed trom Liverpool on the 24th ef November, put into Holyhead, and sailed from there on the 2nd Dec. Mr. J. G. Lawrie launched, on the 15th December at Whiteinch, a screw steamer of 650 tons, named the Rangitoto. This vessel, which is to be employed in the mail service at Australia, is fitted up for 70 first-class and 70 second class passengers. She will be loaded by Messrs. Houler Brothers, for Melbourne, &c., and will sail during next month. We would direct attention to the important judgment given yesterday, on the special case submitted to the Judges, in the action " The Attorney General v.Jones." The object was to get a decision as to whether the Crown was entitled to possession of waste lands taken possession of under the Regulations of 1856, and upon which there had been a failure to expend, within four years. 40s an acre improvements. The Court answered in the affirmative, and held that there could be no raising of the question as to whether the Crown was called upon to repay the 10s an acre paid on the issue of the certificate. The Court, after an elaborate review of the facts and the law, thus concluded its judgment:— " The preceding reasons lead us to the conclusion that every right, legal or equitable, of the defendant to the land which is the subject of this action, is at an end." —Otago Daily Times, Feb. 18.
