LYTTELTON MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

. The usual weekly sitting of the Council took place at the Town Hal), on Friday evening. Present, all the members except Mr. William Day» who was unavoidably absent. The minutes of former meeting read and confirmed. A letter was read'by the Chairman, received from the Provincial Secretary, about the sum due to the Municipality, for the present year; and acknowledging the liability of the Provincial Government for part of the expenses incurred for the reception of Sir George Grey. The reading of this letter resulted in the Council agreeing to the following resolution, proposed by Mr. Hargreaves—" That this Council is of opinion that inasmuch as the letter of the Provincial Secretary, dated Sept. 10th, acknowledges that the amount of £1500 is due to this Council, interest should be claimed fram the Provincial Government for such amounts as were not paid and are still due." The Clerk was directed to apply for the sum due from the Provincial Government, and also to collect the sums of money subscribed at the public meeting towards the expenses of the Governor's reception. Official notification under the clauses of the Municipal Ordinance was received from Messrs Jones and Co., contractors, that they are about to erect a stone building for Mr. William Walker, in London street, and that they require the approval of the Town Surveyor to levels, &c. Subject ordered to be referred to the Surveyor. Mr. Hargreaves called the attention of the Council to the alleged improvements made on the Zig Zig by Messrs. Sherratt, Brothers, under their contract. He was aware that the Government officials had made some complaints about the way the work had been executed; he had noticed the walling in partiI ticulur, and he considered it would require very little eiFort to throw it down. He was sure if a horse and cart backed against it the wall would give way, and all would go over. He wished to have the contract read. The Surveyor produced the contract, and also read several letters addressed by him to the contractors, and to the Provincial Government Engineer and Secretary of Public Works, on the subject. He stated the work was not finished. Mr. Hargreaves said, after what he had heard read, he was well satisfied that their Surveyor had done his duty, and that the Provincial Government officers had censured him without cause, and if fault was attached to any one he was sure it was not to their Surveyor. Sherratt, Brothers, applied for an extension of time to complete their contract, which was granted. The Surveyor's report was then read and consii re <| recommendation about the footpath, near the Union Bank of Australia, was agreed to; also the employment of the hard-labour gang in Britain Terrace, Exeter-street, aud Oxford-street. Mr. O'Hara, the lessee of the bathing place, applied for permission to erect a platform for the use of bathers, for diving off. The Council refused the ap • plication, on the ground that the proposed stage would be within public view, and recommended the lessee, on any future application, to accompany it with a plan. A deputation from the Colonists' Societv, consisting of Messrs. S. E. Wright, Preece, Ballestiee, and Kayner. yraited upon the Municipal Council respecting their new building. Mr. Wright stated that e . Building Committee formed to carry out the I design of the Council, adopted for Town Hall and other buildings, that they found their funds toft equate to erect the Colonists' Society building on hp same plan.
