CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.

Monday, October 11. The Council met at the usual hour. Present: All the members. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. The following letters and papers were read:— * Letter from the Provincial Secretary relative to clearing the water cress from the River Avon. Letter from Mr. G. Butler in reference to waste water being thrown in front of his house by the occupier of the British Hotel. Letter from Mr. Bayley, of Lichfield street, complaining of a drain in Cashel street being very offensive. The Town Clerk was directed to write to Messrs. Brown and Co., the owners of thebrewery, on the subject. An application was considered from the Volunteer Fire Brigade asking the Council for a contribution towards the expense of purchasing a steam fire engine. The City Council directed the clerk to inform the committee of the fire brigade that a sum of £250 is suggested to be paid out of the rates, to be hereafter levied in the city. The grant to be made upon the condition that the engine be considered the property of the city. A proposition from Messrs. Homan and Banks to water the main thoroughfares was received.

A petition wss received from the inhabitants of Worcester street, praying' that the Council would erect a cart bridge across the River Avon in a line with the street, and offering to contribute a portion of the expense.

Letter from Mr. Wood, saddler, in reference to his laying down asphalte pavement in front of his premises.

A letter was read from Mr. Bead, requesting permission for his cab to occupy the stand opposite Mr. Ruddenklau's. Permission was granted upon the usual terms.

The Town Clerk reported the receipt of £151 from the various sources.

It was also resolved that the Surveyor do adopt the following rules with reference to supplying earth to private persons:—lnall cases when the owner pr j

occupier of any section of land within the city can produce a certificate from the Inspector of Nuisances that there exists a hole or gully which is likely to constitute a nuisance from the accumulation of water, &c., he may, on application to the City Surveyor, he permitted to remove earth from the public streets or places within the city as should be directed by the Surveyor. . _ The Surveyor was authorised to fence the drain on the west side of Antigua street; also river bank on Cambridge terrace, from Papanui bridge to Worcester street. That the City Surveyor be directed to lower the Ferry road form the White Hart to Barrett's Hotel; also that he advertise for tenders for supplying broken metal for the Ferry road to the White Hart Hotel, and also for forming the South Town Belt from Colombo street to Madras street. That the Surveyor be directed to secure the trees on the East Town Belt from wind by stays, as suggested by him.
