CHRISTCHURCH CITY COUNCIL.

Monday, 31st August. Present: All the members except the Hon. John Hall. The following letters and papers were read and considered:— A petition signed by about forty residents at St. Albans, complaining of night soil being carted there, which was a great nuisance to them. A counter petition signed by fifteen inhabitants o.f the same district, stating that no inconvenience was experienced from the carting of the night soil as stated above. The City Council Bills, Nos. 1 and 2, were laid before the Council, and the chairman was requested to hand them to Mr. Travers for his perusal. Report of the City Surveyor was read. Also a report upon the water supply, the consideration of which was deferred to the next meeting. Eeport of the Inspector of Nuisances. The following resolutions were passed:— "That the application of Messrs. Dalgety, Buckley, and Co., and Mr. McLean, for stone kerbing in front of their premises, be complied with upon the usual terms. " That the City Surveyor do advertise for tenders for the supply of timber for the requirements of the City Council for the year ending 30th September, 1864. " That Sellars be directed to cart the night soil and ashes from the city to the reserves specially made and sanctioned by the Provincial Government for that purpose, and that no deposit of night soil be permitted in any other place. "That the Inspector of Nuisances make a thorough inspection of every property throughout the city without delay, and to do so by sections, taking each block separately, and noting carefully tlfe result of his inspection; to be laid before the Council. " That a committee, consisting of Messrs. Luck, Tribe, Bishop, and Alport be appointed to enquire into the working of the system of pans adopted in some portions of the city, and to suggest any improvement considered desirable in the present arrangement, with a view of thoroughly deodorising night soil before its removal." The next meeting of the Council will be held on Monday next, at 7 o'clock.
