OTAGO.
We have received our usual files of Otago papers to the 11th July. We take the following from the ' Daily Times The prisoners in Dunedin Gaol are in a state of insubordination against the prison authorities, refusing to obey orders and demanding to see the Superintendent. No reason is assigned for their conduct. A strong gale has been experienced; several instances of damage to property in the town of Dunedin are reported. An action has been tried in the Supreme Court in which the plaintiff, Mr. C. P. Fox, obtained £400 damages against Captain Brown of the John Duncan, as compensation for false imprisonment on a charge brought against him by the defendant. A Southland sheepowner, Mr. Freeman Jackson, has been fined one shilling each on 900 sheep, declared by the inspector to be infected with scab. Mr Oliver, another station-holder, has been mulcted in the penalty of 6d each on 600 sheep, for driving them over another person's run without due notice and permission. THE ESCORT. The quantity of gold brought down by the two escorts of July 1 and 7, is as follows:— oz. dwts.
