POSTAL COMMUNICATION WITH AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND.
Mr. Macguire [Feb. 16] inquired of the UnderSecretary for the Colonies whether any correspondence had passed between her Majesty's Government and the Colonial Governments of Australia and New Zealand respecting a new postal service between those colonies and the mother country via Panama; and, if so, whether there was any objection to lay such correspondence on the table of the House. Mr. C. Fortescne said that there had been no correspondence which would be worth laying upon the table. The Legislature of New Zealand had passed an act for the establishment of postal communication with this country via Panama, and the Post-master-General of the colony was now in this country for the purpose, among other objects, of forwarding that project. But little correspondence, however, had taken place, and the Legislature of Victoria had declined to be a party to the scheme.
