MOORE, City Surveyor, Christchurch, March 26, 1863. 1482 FIRE INSURANCE.—KEROSENE OIL. 11HE undersigned agents, carrying on the business . of Fire Insurance, in Canterbury, New Zealand, announce, that in consequence of the very hazardous nature of the recently introduced volatile oils, known as kerosene, paraffin, petroleum, &c., it is deemed necessary to increase the rates of premium on all places of business where these oils are stored or used. In the case of private dwellings, no alteration in the rates at present charged will be made. The following additions will be made to the present scales of rates on all policies issued or renewed on and after the 25tli of March proximo. On shops or stores where it is used for the purpose of illumination or sold retail, 7s. 6d. per cent additional. On all warehouses or stores where it is kept in unbroken packages, ss. per cent additional. Not more than 50 gallons allowed on the premises. Christchurch, Feb. 28, 1863. 1326 THE FINE ARTS. IT is proposed to establish a Society for the promotion of the Fine Arts in the Province of Canterbury. The object will be:— Ist. To establish an Annual Exhibition of Works of Art, including both Originals and Copies, Oil Colour Paintings, Water Colour Drawings, Photographs, Engravings, &c. 2nd. To establish a School of Design. 3rd. To lay the foundation of a permanent Gallery of Works of Art. It is proposed that the Annual Subscription of a Member should be Ten Shillings. Persons wishing to become Members are requested to communicate with H. F. Worsley, Secretary pro. tern., or any Member of the Provisional Committee.
