GOLD SEEKING ON THE OPAWA.

TO THE EDITOB OP THE IYTTEITON TIMES. Crn _j noticed in your paper of Saturday last a document published by Mr. Maude and signed by Mr A Rose, the sub-collector of customs m l inmru. The position occupied by Mr. Rose and Dr. Levy induced me to place reliance upon their statements in reference to the existence of gold m the Opawa stream. Short as my examination of that stream was, I was perfectly satisfied that it contains no

indication whatever of the existence of gold; nop does it even contain the quartz spoken of by Mr. Rose Mr. Rose has the bail at his feet, and may make up for my impatience by employing a fewdiggers further to prospect the river. Seaing the magnitude of the reward offered by the Provincial Government, he ought to have little hesitation in risking a few pounds to obtain it, more particularly if he is satisfied that the result will prove his truth and my iynorunce. Mr. Rose's gift of the "lizard skeleton (Saurian genus)" mentioned in the document referred to, has been duly reported by me to the council of the Canterbury Philosophical Institute. Unfortunately some stupidly matter-of-fact medical and other gentlemen who have seen it persist in saying that it is part of a mutilated skeleton of some aquatic bird, which had in ail probability afforded a meal to a rapacious hawk. I am afraid that Mr. Rose's gold discovery is somewhat on a par with his "lizard skeleton (Saurian genus.) Yours, &c., JULIUS HAAST.
