DOWLING, > Hon Secg 3652 R. BRUNSDENJ non ' oeCß ' TO THE ELECTORS OF THE CITY OF CHRISTCHURCH. GENTLEMEN, —Another vacancy having occurred in the Provincial Council, by the retirement of Mr. I. T. Cookson, I beg to announce myself as a candidate for the seat, and to solicit your votes and interests in may behalf. 1 had intended to do so on the occasion of Mr. Brittan's retirement, but I did not think it prudent to subject you to the inconvenience of a contested election, unless some reasonable objection had been entertained to the candidate presenting himself to your notice. My ideas on the principal political topics of the day have not changed since I had last the honor to address you. Should you elect me, my votes shall go to the furtherance of railroads to the utmost limits that prudence will allow. I will advocate liberal grants to the Municipal Council of our city as long as they do not interfere with the just requirements of the outlying districts. I will give my most serious attention to the Educational question, but in common with many others I am not prepared to express any decided opinion on so large and so important a subject. I should give my support to tfny well considered scheme of the Government for the extension of emigration. On general matters I will endeavour to support the Government as far as I conscientiously may, without giving blind adherence to any party; and should you do me the honor to return me as your representative, it shall be my constaut care to faithfully .watch your interests. I beg to remain, gentlemen, Your obedient servant, 3761 JAMES GEO. HAWKES. TO THE ELECTORS OF THE HEATHCOTE DISTRICT. GENTLEMEN, —I have been honoured with a request from some of your number to come forward as a candidate for the seat in the Provincial Council lately occupied by Mr. Murray. Should your choice fall upon ine, I shall enter the Council determined to give a well considered and independent vote on all questions. I shall not be tied to the policy of any Government, and shall remain, I hope, unswayed by personal or private considerations. As a resident in your district, and as one whose interests are closely bound up with the welfare and prosperity of the province, I venture confidently to solicit your support. I am, gentlemen, Yours respectfully, JOSHUA STRANGE WILLIAMS. Opawa Farm, Oct. 2,1862. 3853 TO J. S. TURNBULL, Esq., M.D. WE whose names are heveto appended, respectfully request that you will allow yourself to be nominated as a candidate for the representation of the City of Christchurch, in the Provincial Council, at the ensuing election, caused by the resignation of Mr. Joseph Bvittan. W. Wilson, James Willis, John Murray, Strickland S. Field, John C. Aikman, D. Clarkson, W. Charlesworth, John C. Angus, John Birdsey, W. Stringer, Samuel Bealey, L. E. Nathan, G. Miles, James Johnston, Robert Watson, James Kerr, J. Ollivier, Edward Reece, Chas. H. Greenstreet, D. Inwood, &g., &c. To Mr. W. Wilson and the other Gentlemen signing the Requisition Gentlemen,—l have great pleasure in complying with a request so thoroughly in keeping with my own wishes, namely, to become a candidate for the representation of Christchurch in the Provincial Council. I owe much to the uniform courtesy and kindness of my fellow-citizens during the past four years, and in consequence I feel that I can work in their service with a very sincere, a very earnest desire to repay a portion of that kindness. For a young and untried politician to enter the Provincial Council with your proved and experienced members, is sufficiently difficult, but to repair the loss which you now sustain by the^ resignation of an old and faithful representative is a portion of the task I would now assume which I can never hope fully to achieve. Should you, however, return me, I will strive to merit your approval by discharging duties of your representative faithfully and energetically. I am, gentlemen, Your obedient sorvant, J. SOMERVILLE TURNBULL. Christchurch, Sept. 15,1862. 3568 NOTICE. THE 'Canterbury Standard' of Thursday next, October 9th, will contain the INAUGURAL ADDRESS of the President of the Philosophical Institute of Canterbury.
