Candles fkom Paraffins.—There is more romance in science than in necromancy. Earth tapping for oil is more productive than table rapping for tin. Petroleum, or earth oil, the gravy of our globe, is turning some of the humble farmers of America into millionaires. It is only to be hoped our planet will not be bored to death. How if this oil should be the lubricator of the world, and that we take it from the earth's axis, shall we not one fine morning find everything at a dead lock for want of grease ? There would appear, however, no fear of this if we do but burn the candles of paraffine fast enough, as the agents of those gifted " chandler chemists," the Messrs. Field, of Lambeth Marsh, tell us that after combustion the elements of which the candles are composed return to their proper places. We little thought that, when we vowed we would barn no other candles but these beautiful and economical ones upon our domestic altars, we were really intent upon keeping" tlie world a-going, as the candles;, themselves appear intent upon going all over^hei world, being great favourites with shippers from' their resistance of a high temperature. — The Globe, February 21.
