CHRISTCHURCH MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
On the 31st ult., at the usual weekly meeting of the above body, J. Hall, Esq., chairman, submitted a letter from the Provincial Secretary, signifying the intention of the Government to recommend that the Provincial Council grant a reserve of land, as an endowment of the municipality. It was also reported -that £3000 had been placed to the credit of the Council in the Bank of New South Wales, who had pronjised terms considered satisfactory. A select committee was appointed to determine what works in the city were most urgent, and the best means of executing tho same. Messrs. Wilson and Barnard reported that- they had, with tho assistance of tho the Government surveyor, selected five blocks of land, amounting to about 100 acres, as receptacles tor tilth, and their selection was approved by the Council.' Mr. Alport gave notice of several important motions for next sitting, and the Council adjourned. # At the meeting hold on Monday last, tho terms of "I* 0. I' 6B*oll deposits, proposed by the New South Wales Bank, were agreed to. A report? of the Committee on works in the town was read. The Council then proceeded to consider the applications for the office of Town Clerk; tho following were produced and read:—i, M. G. Jobbiu; 2, J. E. Cooper ;3, Mr

For the office of Survey there were four candidates:—Messrs. Rowland fvf vis, C. P. Soulsby, Harkyns, and Carter, but tht ! appointment was deferred until Tuesday n«aX evening On the motion of Mr. Alport, seconded W Ms. Wilson, it was resolved "that the effectual rZ moval from within the city of stagnant water ami accumulations of dung, soil, filth, and other noxS or offensive matter, is a question of the greatest im portance to the health of the inhabitants, and deserve the prompt and earnest atention of this Council » On the motion of Mr. Alport, it was resolved »th^ for the purpose of ascertaining by what means thpaiS objects can, with a due regard to the circumstance of the municipality, be most effectually accom pushed, it is desirable that a commission of duly qualified persons shall be appointed, and be authorised by this Council to investigate and report finally upon the whole subject." It was determined that the Town Surveyor, Messrs. Harman, Davie, Gould and Drs, Turnbull and Stedman, be requested to serve on such commission. There was no other business of importance.
