LICENSING MEETING.

The adjourned meeting of Justices of the Peace f n r the purpose of considering applications for Public- House licences for the, Province of CanterJ! "Us.held yesterday at •Christchurch, J. W. Hamilton Esq., K.M., in the chair. There were also present the following justices:— B Woollcombe, Esq., R.M., and Charles Bowen, Thos. H. Potts, Edward Chapman, and W. Donald, ' Al" rthe general licences which were received at Christchurch as in the list published were' considered to-day, except that of Joseph Felton at the Courtenay Arms, that of Mary Thomson of the Boyal Hotel, and Thomas Barrett (new) of Christchurch, which were adjourned until Wednesday, the 16th instant, for the purpose of procuring evidence of the manner in which the two former houses were conducted, the police and various private parties having complaints to make against them. The application of Thomas Barrett to be dependent on that of the Royal. . The following General Licences were granted. J. F. Ballard, Eowland Davis, Charles Newton, and Whale and Banks, all of Christchurch ; John Dilloway, Ricearton ; Samuel Treleaven, Bridge Inn, North Road ; Thomas W. Foster, Rangiora; George Jackson, Kaiapoi ; William Meddings, Papanui ; Joseph Papprill, Rangiora ; Edwin Pearce, Heathcote Arms ; Sadler and Whalley, Kaiapoi ; George Day, Kaiapoi ■, William White, Kaiapoi ; Edward Panckhurst, Woodend. All the other applications for general licences were refused. , ; • All the Wine and Beer Licences received at Christchurch, as in the list published were considered and the following were granted :—■William Stringer, Thomas Atkinson, James Mann, and Eleanor Dillon, of Christchurch ; David Everest, of Kaiapoi. All the others were refused. : \ - ': ;

• The meeting was not over at half-past four o'clock yesterday afternoon ; we are unable therefore to report the further proceedings, including the consideration of the Conditional Licences.
