Premiums. Designs must be. sent in not later than January 1, 1859, addressed to the Provincial Secretarj7, Government Offices, Christchurch, and endorsed " Design for Waiinakariri Bridge." The rejected designs will be returned to their owners as soon as possible after the Provincial Government have made their award. INSTRUCTIONS TO COMPETITOKS. The width of the River is 1290 feet from bank to bank. The ground on each side of the River is flat for some distance, and the banks are on a level with, the line of the highest freshes. The ordinary water line is eight feet, and the deepest part of the channel twelve feet below the banks. The bottom of the River is a shifting bed of j shingle at a depth of from four to twelve feet j below the banks, resting on claj at a further depth of four feet and upwards. The soil of the banks is sand and light loom. The material of the Bridge is left to the discretion of competitors. Competitors will attend especially to the following points :— Risk of scouring the foundations. Danger from drift timber in freshes. Difficulty of securing the banks. Simplicity of construction.
