WANGANUI.
(From tho ' Wanganui Chronicle.) The Flag Staff.—For some days past we have been visited with strong gales from S. AY„ with heavy rain and occasional thunder and lightning. During one of the squalls the Flagstaff on the York Hill was blown down. But we are happy to say that this loss will be promptly repaired. Subscriptions have been offered generally and Messrs. Taylor and Watt have made a liberal contribution. Colonel Patience also has evinced his interest in the welfare of Wanganui, by offering the services of a sergeant and ten men for the purpose of assisting in restoring the flag. Mr. James Wilson of Turakina appears to receive general support from the electors of the Wanganui and Rangitikei district, as a candidate to replace Mr. Gibson in the Provincial Council. Mr. Wilson puts forth no explicit declaration of his political opinions ; but there is a general impression that he will act with the existing Provincial Government. It is also presumed that Mr. James Blyth's opinions tend in the same direction, but that gentleman has not the courtesy to acknowledge in any way, that we are aware of, the very handsome manner in_ which the electors of Wanganui took him as their representative on trust
The Races.—From all wei'can learn, there will be very good races at Wanganui this Season. There are, of course, some dissentients; but generally, people are satisfied with the restriction of the Stewards' pi'ogramme of races to_ one day ; because the funds at their disposal will not admit of decent stakes for two. There may be hack races, private matches, rural sports &c., on the second day. As the AVanganui men were not niggard of their support to the last AVellington races, perhaps our Southern friends will grace our races with their presence, and aid our friends with their subscriptions. We areinstructed to state that Messrs. Stuart Kinross & Co., have been requested to act as Treasurers at Wellington. We may add that all entrance.-, must be made at the York Hotel, Wano-anui, before 9 o'clock p.m. on Tuesday the 18th of November. -
