yourself to be again nominated as the representative for this town in the next General assembly. [Mere follow the signatures/) Christchurch, Nov. 6, 1855. Sir,—l have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a requisition signed by yourself aud others of the electors of Ly lie! ton, requesting me to allow myself again to he put iv nomination as the representative for Lyttelton iv ihe next General Assembly. I was, as you are aware, very unwilling again to take any part in the public affairs of the colony generally ; both for private reasons and also because the business of the Provincial Government fully engages my time and attention. It has, howevpr, been so stroncrly urged upon me by many of my friends that I may he of some use in advocating tbe claims ofthe. Province in the adjustment of those important questions which will come under discussion in llie next session of the General Assembly, that I can hardly refuse to comply with your request. I have the more pleasure in doing so, because I see the names of so many electors of different political views attached to the requisition that I may hope my election will not lie contested : for I should be exceedingly reluctant during the time I hold the office of Superintendent of the Province again to be placed iv a position which would bring me into collision with any portion of the community. If the electors of Lyttelton should do me the high honour of again constituting me their representative, I need not say thai I will do all in my power to promote the interests, both of Lyttelton and of the Province. It will be impossible for me to canvass the electors personally, but I shall be happy to attend at any public meeting to explain my views upon any public question. I have the honour to be, Sir, Your most obedient Servant, James Eoward Fitz Gerald. James Sp»wers, Esq., To the Independent Electors of Akaroa. GENTLEMEN, —When I first stood forward (at your request) as a candidate for the honour of representing you in the Provincial Council, you may recollect I stated to tou my fears, that my duty towards you would interfere with my clerical duties. Those fears have now been fully realized, the difficulty of providing a suhstiiule, during my absence at the Council, becoming every day greater, I beg, therefore, forthwith to resign the trust, when I cannot perform its duties to your benefit or my own satisfaction. In doing so, however, let me assure you I shall always feel a deep interest in the welfare of Akaroa, though not her representative. I am, dear Sirs, Your obliged servant, William Aylmer. Glencarny, Akaroa, Nov. 12th, 1855. New Zealand to Wit, — Province of Canterbury.
