TARANAKI.
We have received the Taranaki herald ofthe 12th of September, announcing the arrival ofthe Duke of Portland Worn Wellington, with 200 rank and file of the 65th Regiment, and several field pieces. This has had a very salutary effect upon the Natives. Since the arrival of the troops, the Herald says, " Not a shot has been fired by either party since the soldiers landed. Ngatiruanui has shrunk home again, armed natives no longer parade our streets, the tapu is taken off the Waitara road : in short, the most profound tranquillity appears to reign throughout the district. But when we seek to ascertain what guarantee exists for ihe continuance of so serene a state, we reluctantly admit that we are
at fault. No man in his senses can doubt that on the removal ofthe troops the settlement would instantly relapse into a state worse than that from which it has emerged, and even a large reduction of the force wotdd probably, as matters now stand, be followed by bad results."
