To the Editor of the Lyttelton Times.

Sir, —On Monday evening last, J attended a small meeting of the congregation of the temporary church at Lyttelton, numbering in all 23, including 3 clergymen, when il was resolved that after Christmas next, the funds arising from amonthly offertory, should he given to the minister as a part of his income. A few of those present protested against such a perversion of the proceeds of the offertory fioin their legitimate and universally understood object, viz., to be expended in alms to the poor, and considering it a highly dangerous precedent so to appropriate them, proposed, that the funds for the clergyman's income should be raised in part by means of pew rents and special collections after sermons, as is almost universally _|the case in England, where tithes and Church rates are discontinued. Believing that a large number ol the congregation participate in this latter view of the matter, I sincerely hope that some means may be devised of bringing the subject inform before the Bishop on his visiting Lyttelton. Yours truly, Orthodox. Lyttolton, Sept; 25th, 1855.
