Gentlemen,— HAVING been a resident on the Plains ever since the foundation of this Settlement, and during that time taken an active interest in its prosperity, I am induced to offer myself as a Candidate for the seat in the Provincial Council, rendered vacant by the resignation of Captain Simeon. Should you do me the honour of electing me, I shall take care to use my best energies in promoting your interests, and those of tbe Province generally. Province of Nelson, New Zealand, to wit :— WHEREAS a writ under the hand of His Honor Edward William Stafford, Esq., Superintendent of the Province of Nelson, bearing date the 30th day of last July, has been directed to John Poynter, Esq., Resident Magistrate and Principal Returning Officer for the Province of Nelson, requiring and commanding him to cause to be elected by and from amongst tbe voters duly qualified for that purpose, freely and indifferently, and in manner and form prescribed by law, an additional member to serve in tbe Provincial Council for tbe District of Amuri; NOW therefore, I, Edward Jollie, Esq., Deputy Returning Officer for the said district, do hereby in pursuance of the said writ appoint Monday, the Bth day of October next, at Twelve o'Clock at noon, at my bouse, Mount Parnassjis, for tbe nomination of a member for the said district. In the event of a Poll being demanded, I hereby further appoint Tuesday, the 9th day of October next, for the Polling. The Polling to take place at Mount Parnassus, and to commence at fen o'clock in the forenoon, and close at four o'clock in the afternoon ofthe same day. Provincial Secretary's Office, Christchurch, August 28th, 1855 "VTOTICE is Hereby Givek, that if any -l-* Immigrants who have given Promissory Notes in part payment of assisted passages to this Province, and of which payment will be required a year after tbe date of their landing, are willing to pay the whole or any part of their engagements before that time, they will be allowed a Discount as follows : — Within 3 months after landing, 10 per cent. Within 6 months after landing, 5 per cent. Payments to be made to the Provincial Treasurer, Christchurch. By His Honor's Command,, Joseph Bp.ittan, Provincial Secretary. NOTICE. "PHILLIP ASHTON (25 years Riding- -*- Master to the Bengal Horse Artillery) informs the Public of Canterbury that, at the request of several influential gentlemen, he has established himself at Christchurch as an agent for the purchase and sale of horses. Books are open for the registration of horses for sale, wherein the description, pedigree, capabilities, and price of each, will be given, for the benefit of intending purchasers. Further information on all matters relating to horses may he made personally or by letter.
