BAY Of ISLAND.

(From a Correspondent of the" Southern Cross.") July 26th, 1855. The war between Nga Tewai and Nga Puhi has resulted in two of the former being shot dead and a couple wounded. Through the interference 6f the Resident Magistrate here a truce has been agreed to by both parties, .which we hope may "result in a permanent peace. But from the various old prejudices existing, it be■c'rimes a matter of considerable doubt how long these partially amicable relations will continue, liie depression of business, in consequence of this rupture, lias been severely felt, but the-ge-nera] activity in agricultural preparations proliiises more prosperity for the ensuing season. After long a in.! unsuccessful efforts, the R:iwiti Maoris have succeeded in capturing a line whale this week, near the heads of the Buy. 'Lhe yield of oil has not yet been ascertained, but the circumstance has given a prompt impulse to the fishery, from which more success may be confidently augured. " ' It is reported that Mr. Kemp is likely to succeed admirably in purchasing land from the natives round the Bay. He seems to go about it in the proper manner; and the result is as was always predicted from energetic measures,— the natives are becoming generally anxious to sell, aud we may expect flourishing settlements here at an early period. It is a pity Mr. Kemp had not been sent hither a twelvemonth-ago. If so the Bay would present a different aspect to the desolation which is now apparent.
