INDIAN OFFICERS PROCEEDING TO THE CRIMEA.
A Grand banquet, attended by several of her Majesty's ministers, has been given to General Vivian and the Indian officers now on their way to join the army in the Crimea. Tiie occasion was one of unusual interest, initiating a movement which, we hope, the wisdom of Government will hereafter extend to its obvious and, indeed, unavoidable consequences. It would not be only illogical, but unreasonable, to require from Indiiui officers the contributions of experience and skill, and a community of danger with the Queen's troops, without attaching to such services their natural rewards ; and as we believe it will be impossible in a short time to resist the force of this argument, we are the less disposed at this moment to raise a question, the discussion of which cannot be averted, but which may be more effectively entered upon when the gallantry of our countrymen from the East shall have won its laurels in the field. As it is obvious that such gallantly would not be merely ill repaid, but slighted and insulted, by the fugitive recognition of a local and temporary
rank, conferred in ihe hour of peril, to he withdrawn in ihe hour when victory shall have instueii peace, so it is quite certain that the justice and magnanimity of England will ultimately repair whatever is defective or unsound in the present regulations. — Home Netvs.
