LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
LYTTELTON COLONISTS' SOCIETY.
An adjourned meeting of the abuve Society was held on Thursday evening last, pursuant to notice. Mr. Spowers in the chair. After the minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, the following resolution was adopted upon the proposition of Mr. Alport, seconded by Mr. Fyfe :
" That a vote of thanks be forwarded to Mr. Thompson for his kind present of the maps belonging to Allison's History of Europe.''.
The Chairman then called upon the Committee appointed to arrange respecting the gift of Mr. Fitz Gerald of£H6 to the Society, to read their report. After the report had been read by Dr. Donald, and a proposition of Mr. Porter's to omit Sir W. Hooker's New Zealand Flora froir the list of books proposed to be purchased, negatived, it was resolved, upon the motion of Mr. Wilcox, seconded by Mr. Beeby,
" Ti>at the Report be adopted, with the understanding that the list lie on the table for one week for any suggestion that may be offered for the consideration of the Committee.'1
A vote of thanks having been unanimously voted to the Committee,
The Chairman called upon Dr. Donald to read, the report of the Committee on Municipal Institutions for the town of Lyttelton, which having been read, Dr. Donald proposed to omit the words " further to elect out of their own number or from the constituency, three aldermen," from the following clause :—
" The above mentioned twelve Councillors to elect annually out of their own number a Mayor, and further to elect either out of their own number, or from the constituency, three Aldermen, to whom, that is, to the Mayor and aldermen, should be confided the duties and powers of Borough Magistrates." Mr. Alpout seconded the proposition, and upon [a. show of hauds [a majority declared for the amendment.
On the proposition of Dr. Donald, it was resolved that a copy of the report, as amended, be forwarded to Mr. Fitz Gerald as Superintendent and as member for Lvttelton.
Races on New Yka.r'3 Day.—-A match is to be run on the new course, about a mile beyond lliccarton Cross Roads, on New Year's Day, between Mr. Charles Turner's horse Cruiskeen, and Mr. John Pattison's mare Lad;/ Gladstone, for JpoO a side. Two mile heats, ._-„> and to carry 11 stone each. The Jockey Club have undertaken to mark out the course, and to superintend the arrangements. We understand that the stewards will also be prepared to make up matches or sweepstakes on the ground on that day, provided the owners of horses running / subscribe £l each to the Racing Fund. Many of our readers may be unaware, that Mr. Pattison, one of the parties to the match, is an aboriginal native, residing at Kaiapoi. The marc is being trained, and will be ridden, by It. Hilton, Esq. ; Cruiskeen by Mr. Freeth.
