NELSON.

Election of Mr. A dams. —The election of a member for the Provincial Council which tuok place on Saturday last, is the first opportunity which has been afforded the Electors in any of the Southern Provinces of expressing- their se Itiments on what has lately taken place in Anckland. No one who attended the (Joint House on Saturday, and who made himself acquainted with the sentiments of the electors, can be isrnorant of the fact, that Mr. Travers owes the sorry position he stood upon the poll, to his desertion of the party he had always hitherto supported, for the party he hail uniformly condemned. Under no circumstances would Mr. Travers we believe have succeeded against Mr. Adams at the late election, for the opposition

was most ill-timed ; but nothing short of a strong feeling of public indignation could have placed him who was once a popular favourite in the humiliating position of being able to poll only forty-eight votes out of a constituency of about 220, after as keen a canvas as it was possible to make. There can be no mistake in the matter. Town and country was hunted over and over again for votes, and where support could not be obtained, neutrality was solicited, and forty-eight supporters was after all the result, or thirteen less than the number of Mr. Adams's majority. We have no space to-day to dwell at any length upon the subject," but we congratulate the electors of Nelson on the spirit they have shown, and the triumph they have achieved.— Nelson Examiner.
