LOCAL INTELLIGENCE.
The half-yearly meeting of the Shareholders of the Joint Stock, Loan, Investment, and Discount Society was held at their offices, at Mr. Alport's Stose, on Tuesday the 4th instant. The meeting was well attended, and the Committee of Management reported upon the progress made by the Society since its commence^ ment, which, we understand, was highly satisfactory to the Shareholders. The whole of the capital has been paid up, and placed out at interest upon undeniable security. The annual meeting of the Lyttelton Colonists' Society was held on Tuesday evening last, in the Lyttelton Town Hall, Mr. Spowers (President) in the chair. The annual Report of the Society having been read, Mr, Porter moved, seconded by Mr. John Shrimpton, that it be adopted, which was carried. The list of officers and committee nominated, with one exception, Mr. Varyer declining to serve for another year, was accepted by the meeting j and a vote of thanks to the Secretary for the past year (Mr. Alport), was ordered to be entered in the Society's minutes. On the proposition of Mr. Fyfe, seconded by Mr. Allwright, Messrs. Fyfe, Alhvright, and Graham, were appointed a committee to confer with the Trustees of the Town Hall to arrange the amount of rent to be paid by the Society. The Rev. Mr. Paul having recently presented some valuable books to the room, on the motion of Mr, Alport, the thanks of the Society were unanimously voted to that gentleman ffor the gift. After a vote of thanks to the President and Vice-Presidents for the past year, the meeting separated. We regret that the report read by the chairman reached us too late for insertion. On the 10th inst, the annual meeting of the Christchurch Colonists' Society was held at the white Hart Inn, Christchurch, %vhen H. I. Tancred, Esq., was re-elected President, J. Brittan, Esq., was elected Vice-President, Mr. Packer, Treasurer, and Mr. Packer, jun., Secretary. The proposition of Dr. Martin, affirming " that it is most desirable that the number of Members of the Provincial Council should be increased," after some discussion, was unanimously adopted. Chukch of Scotland.—A large meeting' of the subscribers to the proposed Presbyterian Church was held at the Odd Fellows' Hall, near the Royal Hotel, Christchurch, on Tuesday last, Charles Sidey, Esq. presiding. The report of the Committee having been read, (which will be found in our tenth page), and upon the motion of Mr. Ferguson adopted, and the thanks of the meeting tendered to the members of the Committee, Mr. Wilson moved the following resolution :— " That a Minister of the Free Church of Scotland be chosen." Mr. Kerr seconded the resolution, and on the Chairman putting the question to the meeting it was carried by a large majority. Mr. Milne then moved, " That the following gentleman be appointed a Building committee, invested with the full amount of discretionary powers suggested in the Report of the general committee :—Messrs. 0. Sidey, Jas. Johnson, JohnlAnderson, — Ferpuson, B, Waitt, W. Wilson, J. Gvubb, W. Stewart, and E. Hay," which was seconded by Mr. Coutts, and carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr. Wilson, C. Sidey, Esq. was appointed Treasurer, in the room of the late Mr. Laurie. A vote of thanks having been voted to the Chairman, the meeting separated.
