TARANAKI.

There is scarcely any news in the Taranaki Herald. It is taken up with the proceedings of the General Assembly. The Herald seems to have formed much the same opinion on His Excellency's Address as we have expressed. A doubt is thrown out as to the accuracy of the statement of the number of the Native race. His Excellency estimates it at one hundred thousand ; Sir George Grey estimated it at one hundred and twenty thousand ; " but there is a strong opinion that both these statements are very greatly in excess. In this settlement, which has the credit of being more thickly populated with Natives than any other, those likely to be best informed on the subject assert that they do not exceed three thousand."
