AGRICULTURAL & HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY

The Autumnal Show of this Society took place on Saturday the 6th inst. in a suitable building1 arranged for the occasion near the Golden Fleece Hotel. The general quality of the grain and the other agricultural produce exhibited was very superior, and excited a good deal of admiration among the numerous visitors who attended the show in the course of the day. The samples of wheat exhibited were particularly admired, and by the best judges were considered equal to anything of the kind that coald have been seen in any county show in England. The different lots of barley also were very superior. Generally the character of all the produce exhibited was highly creditable to the farmers on the Plains, and justifies us in anticipating that the capabilities of this province for the production of every description of agricultural produce, are equal, at any rate, to those of any other settlement, in the southern Hemisphere. The horticultural productions shown were but limited in quantity. We may expect, however, that this will increase from year to year. Fruit is not so soon grown as corn and roots. Among the articles, however, shown in this department we particularly noticed some very fine melons, cucumbers, and tomatoes. In cheese there was no competition; but a cheese from the dairy of the Rev. W. Willock wasfvery much and justly admired, and pronounced equal to the best Cheshire. There was a large and severe competition for the prizes for butter. Indeed, so excellent were all the lots that the judges, we understand, had a difficult tesk in awarding the mede of superiority to any ore. The decision of the judges in all the departments seems, as far as we have been able to learn, to have given general satisfaction. The prizes were awarded as follows :— Red Wheat, Ist prize, Mr. W.
