To the Editor of the LyHelton Times, Sir, —As Chairman of the Committee of Subscribers for the repair of part of the road to Papanui, I beg to inform those who are interested in it that the work has been commenced. The Committee have been able to enter into a contract for the execution of only a very limited portion of the work, as far as the sums in hand will warrant, and they therefore call upon all who have not paid up the subscriptions promised by them, to do so as early as convenient to Messrs. Carr and Roil, or to Mr. Martin, at Papanui, or to any member of the Committee, at Clmstchurch. Allow me to add that, as it is now officially ascertained that no public funds applicable to the repair of our roads can be obtained for some time, it is imperative upon all who feel the urgent need of a practicable road during next winter between Chvistchurch and Papanui Bush, to come forward at once, now that a beginning- has
been made, and not allow the work to stop for want of funds till something effectual has been accomplished. Subscriptions will be received at Christchurch by Messrs. Smart, Worsley, and Boys, and by Sir Thomas Tancred. I am, Sir, your obedient servant, Thomas Tancred. ChrUtchurch, Nov. 30, 1553.
