CHRISTCHURCH CRICKET CLUB.

Annual Match of Marrteb v. Single Members.—This Match came off on Wednesday last, as had been arranged, and proved one of the best that we have seen played in this Settlement. The day, calm and sunny, was extremely favourable, and the ground thronged with spectators, ladies and gentlemen. The " Bacheldors" (to quote a Peggott\'-ism), having won the toss, went to the wickets at half-past eleven, and maintained their stand there for three hours and ten minutes, playing well and steadily all through, against the bowline of Messrs. Boys and Croft. Luncheon followed, after which the inarmed Men went in. Their innings lasted two hour and a half, and was followed by a second innings of the bachelors, who this time fell rapidly, and again gave place to the married men. The approach of evening, however, only permitted His Honor and Mr. Townsend to cover themselver with glory for a few minutes ; and then the stumps were drawn, and the match decided by the result of the first innings; single, 167; married, 102. The bachelors won by a a considerable majority, which we attribute not so much to their bo'vling or batting-, as to their neatness and activity in the field, where Messrs. BJakiston and Parkorson, deserve the highest praise. The Messrs. Bower, par nubile f'ratnim, made. 22 runs each in first-rate style. Nothing could be finer than the brilliant hitting of Mr, YV". G. Brittan and Mr. Sewell on the married side, to whom with Mr. Townsend, we would recommend young and unpractised cricketers to look for example and instruction in" the science of the game. We cannot conclude without regretting that wide.*} and byes formed so conspicuous an item in the score of each side, being almost one third of the whole; and we must add that the Club cannot asniie to anything like perfect cricketing until this blot upon "their play is effaced by.more careful bowling and long-stopping. Practice is the only remedy for this, and by attention to it, we hope, by and bye, to see " cricket all round." We regret that we have no space for the scores, though in type.
