Gentlemen, l_| AVING in accordance with a requisi- -*-*- tion presented to me some weeks ago, signified my intention of offering myself as a Candidate for the honour of representing you in the Provincial Council of the Province of Canterbury, I again beg to solicit your votes, and to assure you that, should you elect me to that office, I shall constantly endeavour to advance the material and political interests of the Colony. Gentlemen, "GRINDING that an impression prevails -"- that my duties as Returning Officer will prevent me from coming forward as a Candidate at the ensuing Election of Members of the Provincial Council, I have the honour to inform you that his Excellency the Governor, acting upon the 37th clause of the Proclamation of the sth March, has deputed to me the power of appointing a Returning Officer in the event of my declining to act personally in that capacity,— which power I yjropose to act upon. I therefore once more offer myself as a Candidate for the honour of. being one of your Representatives in the Provincial Council, assuring you, that should you do me the honour to elect me, it will at all times be my most anxious endeavour to promote your interests to the utmost extent of my power. Gentlemen, 'O'AVING received a very flattering Re* __JL quisition from a large number of the Electors of this Settlement, to allow myself to be put in Nomination for a Seat in the Provincial Council, I have the honour to offer my services as a Member for the Christchurch Country District. I have so recently had an opportunity of explaining my views to you, |that I feel it to be unnecessary for me to dwell upon them upon the present occasion. Should I be fortunate enough to receive your support, it shall be my constant endeavour, by unremitting attention to your interests, to merit the confidence reposed in me. I am not aware that there is anything incompatible in the two offices of member of the General Assembly and member of the Provincial Council being held by the same person. I have, therefore, ventured to solicit your suffrages for both these offices. Should you do me the honour to elect me, you may rely on my constant and best endeavours to'promote the prosperity and welfare of the Province.
