ENGLISH NEWS.

By the " Hashemy" we have files of Sydney papers to the 17th March; for the later ones we are indebted to the courtesy of Captain Ross. No later intelligence from Europe than the 24th November had reached Sydney, an interval of 114 days. Steam, via the Cape, has hitherto done nothing to effect a more rapid communication; a fact which demonstrates the necessity of establishing the Panama route, which the Sydney press is strongly urging. The Morning Herald of the 17th has the following paragraph:— "In an Adelaide paper we find the following as part of a summary of English news to the 24th November. We cannot make out whether the debate referred to had actually taken place, but as it was fixed for the 22nd, we infer that it had, and from the question of ' what next ?' it would appear that the Government had carried their amendment by a majority. ' The only Parliamentary topic of importance which has elicited animated discussion -was Mr. Villievs motion pledging the Government to the maintenance and extension of Free Trade principles.' The Chancellor of the Exchequer took a step upon the announcement of this motion, which is considered as unparalleled in the annals of Parliament. He moved an amendment upon it, in which the precise object of the motion was echoed and repeated. The amendment was essentially the same as the original motion. The only word left out appears to be extension. But as to maintenance, there was no doubt about that. This is the first dodge of the Session. What next? the friends and enemies of the Derby ministry are alike asking.'"
